The school announced a science fiction writing competition, and the entire class signed up within an hour. 'Two thousand words, any world you can imagine,' the notice read. 'The only rule: your story must obey its own logic.' Jack rubbed his hands. 'I have been training for this my whole life.' Lily smiled. 'You have been reading comic books. But we will take it.'

The first week was chaos. Jack wrote a story about a machine that could translate animal thoughts, then deleted it and started over. Lily drafted three openings and rejected them all. Han Mei's plot kept growing until her characters had no room to move. Only Li Lei seemed calm. 'You are all trying to write the whole universe,' he said. 'Start with one room. One character. One strange detail.'

Jack finally finished his story about a boy who could hear the memories of old machines. 'The elevator remembered a soldier's last letter,' he read aloud. 'The coffee machine remembered a wedding. And the bicycle remembered the day its owner learned to ride.' Lily said: 'It is a sad story.' Jack nodded. 'Machines do not have feelings,' he said. 'But we give them our own.'

Lily wrote about a lighthouse on a planet where the sea was made of glass. Han Mei wrote about a genetic laboratory where scientists grew forests from the memories of old trees. And Li Lei wrote the strangest story of all: a world where time moved backwards, so people were born old and grew young. 'The ending is the beginning,' he explained. 'If time flows backward, a goodbye becomes a hello.'

Cozy teacher read all the stories over the weekend. On Monday, she gathered the class. 'I expected imagination,' she said. 'I did not expect wisdom.' She read out Li Lei's ending: 'If time flows backwards, then every ending is a beginning in disguise, and every goodbye is a hello we have not heard yet.' The class was silent, then burst into applause. 'Grammar gave you the sentences,' Cozy said. 'But you gave the sentences souls.'

The competition results came in a month later: Jack won third prize, Lily second, and Han Mei and Li Lei shared first place. But at the celebration, nobody talked about prizes. They talked about the worlds they had built and the friends who had helped build them. 'The best part of writing,' Li Lei said, 'is that you can live a hundred lives. And the second best part is doing it together.' They raised their cups, and somewhere, a glass sea glittered under a lighthouse beam.
