Choose Your Own Road
The career planning seminar had ended, but the real lesson was just beginning: mock interviews. Each student would face a panel of three teachers pretending to be employers. 'You will have ten minutes,' the organiser announced. 'And one piece of advice: the interview does not begin when you sit down. It begins when you open the door.' The students exchanged nervous glances.

Jack went first. He shook hands, sat down, and answered every question about his skills with energy. But when they asked about his weakness, he froze. 'I do not have weaknesses,' he said finally. The panel smiled. 'Then we have found one,' the interviewer said. 'Honesty is a skill. Next time, tell us about a weakness you are working on — that is a strength in disguise.'

Lily's interview was about her dream to study literature. When asked why she wanted the job at a publishing house, she said: 'Because books saved me once, and I want to spend my life returning the favour.' The panel was silent for a moment. Later, one of the teachers told her: 'That was not a rehearsed answer. That was a real one. In interviews, the real answers always win.'
Han Mei answered every question with calm and detail, quoting her volunteer work and her science projects. But her voice wavered when they asked about failure. She took a breath and told them about the coral robot that lost the competition. 'I learned that listening matters more than winning,' she finished. 'And I learned that my team was proud of me anyway.'
Han Mei
Li Lei's interview was the longest. The panel asked him to describe a time he had taken initiative. He told them about the marine club and the listening robot. 'It was not my idea alone,' he said. 'It was everyone's idea, and I was the one who wrote it down. I think leadership is sometimes just the courage to say: let us try.' The panel nodded, and one of them wrote something on a piece of paper.

Afterwards, the students gathered for feedback. 'You were all nervous,' the organiser said. 'Good. Nerves mean you care. And you all told true stories — that is rarer than perfect answers.' Li Lei walked home slowly, thinking. His first mock interview had taught him more than any lecture: a career is not a script. It is a conversation that lasts a lifetime. And the best way to start it is to be yourself, out loud.

现在 were/did / 过去 had done / 将来 were to do
If I were the interviewer, I would hire her.
If he had prepared for the interview, he would have got the job.
If it were to rain tomorrow, we would stay inside.
⚠️ 虚拟倒装:省略 if 时,were/had/should 提前(Had he known...)。
wish / if only / as if
wish + 过去式 / had done / would do
I wish I had chosen engineering.
If only the interview had gone better!
He acts as if he owned the company.
