The Clock That Reversed
The science fiction unit began with a novel called The Clock That Reversed, and Jack finished it in two days. The story was simple on the surface: a young mechanic finds a machine that can turn back time by exactly seven minutes. But the deeper the students read, the more complicated it became. 'If you could go back seven minutes,' Cozy teacher asked, 'what would you do?'
Lily said she would save a dropped ice cream. Han Mei said she would re-answer a quiz question. Jack, of course, wanted to rewind the whole exam week. But Li Lei was quiet. 'What about you?' Han Mei asked. 'I would not use it,' Li Lei said slowly. 'Every mistake I made is part of who I am. If I erased my mistakes, I would erase myself.'

The novel's hero, however, used the machine constantly — to win arguments, to avoid embarrassment, to fix small accidents. Each use had a cost. In the end, he discovered that the machine was not a gift but a trap: every time he rewound time, a stranger lost something precious. 'This is called a paradox,' Cozy teacher explained. 'Science fiction loves to explore the edges of logic.'
The class discussion grew heated. Jack argued that the machine should be used to save lives; Han Mei pointed out that the hero could never know whose life he would change. Lily suggested that the real problem was not the machine but the person using it. 'Technology is neutral,' she said. 'The question is whether we are ready to carry it.'
For their assignment, each student designed a science fiction plot of their own. Han Mei imagined a genetic laboratory where creatures could be created from memories. Jack wrote about a simulated planet run entirely by machines. Li Lei's story was the shortest: a boy finds a device that shows him the future — and decides not to look at it. 'The best endings,' he explained, 'are the ones that stay open.'
On the last day of the unit, Cozy teacher asked them to write a single sentence about the novel. Jack wrote: 'Power without wisdom is a bomb.' Lily wrote: 'Time is a river; do not try to swim upstream.' Han Mei wrote: 'Every machine was once a dream.' And Li Lei wrote: 'The clock that reversed taught me to walk forward.' The four sentences were pinned to the wall, side by side, like four windows opening onto the same sky.
1. What did the machine in the novel do?
2. Why did Li Lei say he would not use the machine?
3. What happened every time the hero rewound time?
4. What did Lily say about technology?
5. What was Li Lei's own story about?
6. What did Han Mei write as her final sentence?

抽象名词(fact / news / idea / hope)+ that + 从句
The fact that the machine could reverse time amazed them.
The news that the hero was trapped spread quickly.
If I were the hero, I would not use the machine.
If he had known the cost, he would not have pressed the button.
suggest/insist + that + (should) + do:The story suggests that we (should) cherish time.
