It all began with a bet. 'I bet you cannot go twenty-one days without your phone at the dinner table,' Jack said to Li Lei. Li Lei, who checked his phone at every meal, accepted without thinking. When the others heard about it, they wanted in. Soon, the whole group had personal challenges: Han Mei would exercise daily, Lily would read before bed, and Jack — who hated mornings — would get up at six.

The first week was brutal. Jack's alarm rang at six, and the world seemed to be made of concrete. Lily fell asleep after two pages. Han Mei's legs ached so much that she limped to class. And Li Lei, at dinner, found his hand reaching for his pocket again and again, as if his phone were calling him. 'Old habits are strong,' he groaned. 'You must be stronger,' Jack replied, and immediately fell asleep on the sofa.

Cozy teacher noticed their red eyes and asked what was happening. When they explained, she smiled and offered a piece of advice: 'Do not rely on willpower alone. Change your environment. Put the phone in another room. Lay out your running shoes the night before. If you make the right choice easy, you will make it more often.' The students looked at one another — that made sense.
The second week was easier. Jack discovered that sunrise was actually beautiful, Lily finished her first book of the year, and Han Mei could run a kilometre without stopping. They created a group chat called 'The 21 Club' where they posted their progress every day. 'We are the best alarm clock in the world,' Han Mei said. 'Friends who hold you accountable.'

On day twenty-one, they celebrated with a picnic. Jack, who had woken at six every single day, presented the sunrise photos he had taken. Li Lei showed his phone's screen-time report: dinner-table usage had dropped to zero. 'I feel different,' he said quietly. 'Lighter. More awake. I wish I had started this years ago.' Lily smiled: 'The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.'

That evening, Cozy teacher found the group's summary in the class newsletter and left a comment: 'Twenty-one days is not magic. It is twenty-one choices, made one after another. And every choice is a small vote for the person you want to become.' Li Lei saved the comment. The next morning, he was up before his alarm, and he realised with a smile: the habit had already chosen him back.
