Seconds That Save Lives
🔊 全文朗读
🔊
The school gym had been turned into a first aid training centre, complete with practice dummies, bandages, and a very serious-looking nurse. 'Listen carefully,' Nurse Chen announced. 'In an emergency, the first few seconds decide everything. Today you will learn skills that may one day save a life — perhaps someone you love.' The students stopped joking and paid attention.
The first lesson was about the recovery position and checking for consciousness. 'You must first assess the situation,' Nurse Chen said. 'Is it safe? Is the person awake? Are they breathing? Only then do you act.' Jack practised on the dummy, counting breaths with shaking fingers. 'Faster,' the nurse encouraged. 'In a real emergency, calm speed saves lives.' By the end of the morning, every student could perform the check without looking at the notes.
Then came the most important skill: CPR. 'Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest,' Nurse Chen demonstrated, 'to the rhythm of a song you all know.' The students laughed when they realised the beat was the chorus of a pop song. Lily found the rhythm quickly, while Li Lei worried he would push too hard. 'Better too hard than too late,' the nurse said firmly.
The next lesson covered common injuries: how to treat a sprained ankle, how to stop bleeding with pressure, and when to call an ambulance. 'You must not move a victim with a suspected back injury,' Nurse Chen warned. 'Sometimes the best help is doing nothing until the professionals arrive.' Han Mei took notes so fast her pen nearly caught fire. The students practised on one another, laughing nervously at first, then growing more and more serious.

The training ended with a surprise test: each student had to respond to a simulated emergency. The alarm rang, and Jack found himself kneeling beside a 'victim' on the floor. His heart hammered, but his hands remembered. Assess. Call for help. Compress. By the time he finished, the nurse was smiling. 'Well done,' she said. 'You would not panic. That is the greatest skill of all.'
Two weeks later, Jack's training proved its worth. A classmate slipped on the wet stairs and landed badly, crying out in pain. While others froze, Jack rushed over, checked the injury, and told everyone to stay calm and keep the boy still until the ambulance arrived. Later, the doctor said the quick, correct first aid had prevented serious damage. Jack said nothing, but Li Lei saw him smile all the way home. That evening, Jack wrote in his diary: 'Today I understood why we learn what we learn.'
