Courage in the Woods
The camping trip had been perfect until the last morning. The four friends had spent two days hiking, swimming, and telling stories around the fire. Then, on a slippery slope near the stream, Han Mei's foot turned beneath her, and she went down with a cry of pain. Her ankle was already swelling, and they were two hours from the nearest road.

For a moment, everyone froze. Then Jack took a deep breath and knelt beside her. 'Okay,' he said, his voice steady. 'First aid. Remember the training.' He checked her ankle carefully and announced: 'No bone sticking out, no severe deformity. Probably a sprain. Han Mei, can you move your toes?' She could. 'Good sign,' Jack said. 'We can handle this.'
Following the procedure they had learned, Jack wrapped the ankle firmly with a bandage from the first aid kit, while Lily found two sticks to use as a splint. Li Lei checked the map and found a shorter route back, though it was steeper. 'You must not put weight on it,' Jack instructed. 'Han Mei, you ride on my back for the first kilometre. Then we switch.' They moved slowly and carefully, checking the map at every turn of the trail.
The hike back was slow and difficult. The path was rough, the sun was high, and their packs felt twice as heavy. But nobody complained. They told jokes, sang songs, and stopped every few hundred metres to check Han Mei's ankle. 'You know,' Han Mei said from Jack's back, 'if I had to be injured, I am glad it happened with all of you.'
At the village clinic, the doctor examined Han Mei and smiled. 'A clean sprain,' she said. 'You did exactly the right things: ice, compression, elevation, and no walking. Whoever taught you first aid deserves a medal.' Jack turned red. 'We learned it at school,' he mumbled. The doctor looked at the four tired, dusty teenagers and said, 'Then your school deserves a medal too.' The four friends exchanged glances, and Jack stood a little taller.
That night, Han Mei rested at home with her foot on a pillow, while her friends argued over who would bring her homework the next day. 'All of us,' Li Lei decided. 'We will take turns.' Han Mei laughed, then grew serious. 'Thank you,' she said. 'Today you did not just save my ankle. You showed me what true friends do when it matters.' Nobody knew what to say, so Jack simply said: 'That is what the training was for.' The moon rose silver over the quiet village.
