The end-of-term science exhibition filled the school hall with colour and noise. Every class displayed its projects, and the four friends stood proudly beside their own table: a model of the water cycle, a poster about plastic pollution, and a strange machine made of bottles that Jack insisted would one day clean the ocean. 'It filters water,' he explained. 'Slowly. Very slowly.'

As visitors passed, the four friends took turns explaining their work. Han Mei talked about marine ecology with the confidence of a scientist. Li Lei described the journey from data to conclusion. Lily told the story of the campaign that had inspired other schools. And Jack, to everyone's surprise, turned out to be a natural showman, drawing crowds with his jokes and his impossible promises. The model water cycle glistened under the hall lights like a small ocean.

Cozy teacher visited their table in the afternoon, examining the bottle machine with great seriousness. 'Tell me the scientific principle behind this,' she said. Jack opened his mouth, then closed it. 'Honestly?' he said. 'The principle is hope.' The whole table burst out laughing, and Cozy teacher laughed with them. 'Hope,' she said, 'is not a bad principle to build a project on.'

Later, the headmaster announced the awards. 'The prize for the most creative project goes to...' — the four friends held their breath — 'the water-cleaning bottle machine!' They cheered and hugged, nearly knocking over their own exhibit. Jack accepted the certificate with a speech that lasted exactly seven words: 'I told you it would work!' The hall roared. Jack held the certificate carefully, as if it were made of glass.

That evening, they celebrated with ice cream and looked back over the year: the science report, the exchange student, the food festival, the camping trip, the first aid training. 'We learned so much,' Lily said. 'The scientific method. Cultural differences. How to wrap an ankle.' Jack nodded. 'And we learned that learning together is better than learning alone.' The ice cream shop stayed open late just for them, or so the owner said.

As they walked home under the stars, Han Mei said quietly, 'You know what the best discovery of this year was? It was not the data, or the prize, or even the science.' 'What was it, then?' Li Lei asked. Han Mei smiled. 'It was us. The four of us, and everything we can do when we work together.' Nobody argued. Under the winter stars, they walked on, already planning next year's adventures. They promised to meet at the same corner next year, with new projects and new dreams.
