The Lantern Festival Reunion
🔊 全文朗读
🔊
The Lantern Festival, which falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, is one of the most important occasions of the year. For Li Lei's family, it is a time to gather together. His grandparents always come from the countryside, his aunt drives two hours to join them, and the whole family sits around one big table. To be together on this night is more important than any gift, and the joy of reunion fills every corner of the house.
The best part of the festival is making tangyuan, the sweet rice balls. Grandmother mixes the flour while Li Lei prepares the fillings: sesame, peanuts and red bean paste. There is a variety of flavours, so everyone can find their favourite. 'The rounder the ball, the rounder the family,' Grandmother says, laughing. Her folk stories, told in the warm kitchen, have been passed down for generations, and Li Lei listens to them every year with the same pleasure.
After dinner, the family walks to the square to watch the lanterns. Hundreds of red lanterns hang in the night sky, each painted with a different pattern. People exchange New Year greetings and try to solve the lantern riddles written on paper slips. When Li Lei solved three riddles in a row, the whole family cheered. It was a small honour, but his proud smile stayed on his face for the whole evening.
At nine o'clock, Cozy sent a message to his students. 'The Lantern Festival is a legal holiday in China,' he wrote. 'But holidays are not just days off. To keep a tradition alive is to keep our memories alive. Tonight, look at the lanterns, eat the tangyuan, and remember: the most precious things in life cannot be bought, only felt.' Li Lei read the message twice and nodded. He looked at his grandparents and felt grateful for every moment.
On the way home, Li Lei walked with his grandfather under the bright moon. 'Next year, I will make the tangyuan myself,' he said. 'And the year after that, I will teach my younger cousin.' Grandfather smiled, his eyes shining like lanterns. 'That is the way traditions live,' he said. 'One hand passes them on, another hand receives them.' Li Lei understood: to pass on a tradition is the greatest pleasure, and the festival would never really end.
