The Music Competition
The news that a national music competition would be held in spring excited the whole band. Wherever they went, the four friends talked about nothing else. 'This is the chance we have been waiting for,' Jack said, his eyes shining. But deep in his heart, he was worried: the other bands were all experienced, and some of them had professional teachers. He wondered whether his little band was really good enough to compete.

Preparation began at once. They decided that whatever happened, they would give their best. Every day after school, they practised for two hours, and Cozy, who knew a lot about music, helped them choose the songs. Jack worked hardest on his guitar technique, playing the same difficult part again and again until his fingers ached. 'The theory is simple,' Cozy told them. 'Talent opens the door, but only practice can carry you through it.'

The day of the competition finally came. As soon as they stepped onto the stage, the hall fell into silence. Jack's heart was beating so fast that he could hardly breathe, but he remembered what Cozy had said: the audience is not a judge; it is a friend. They began to play, and the music filled the hall. Everything went well until the middle of the second song, when suddenly, with a sharp sound, the strings of Jack's guitar broke.
For a moment, nobody moved. Jack's face turned pale, and he suffered a terrible feeling of failure. But then he heard Lily's voice, still singing, calm and steady. He looked at his friends, and they nodded to him. He put down the broken guitar, picked up the microphone and continued singing. The audience, who had been watching nervously, broke into warm applause. When the song ended, everyone stood up.
The band did not win the first prize, but they won something more valuable. 'You turned an accident into a performance,' the head judge said, 'and that is what a true musician does.' On the way home, Jack was quiet for a long time. Then he said, 'I used to think winning was everything. Now I know that music is not about trophies. It is about the courage to continue when everything goes wrong. That is a lesson worth more than any award.'

The song that we sang was written by Lily.
The news that the band won excited everyone.
时间:as soon as / when / while:As soon as they stepped on stage, the hall became quiet.
原因:because / since / as:They practised hard because they wanted to win.
让步:although / even though:Although they lost, they were still happy.
