Sports Legends
Mr Cozy walked into the classroom carrying an old photo. 'Do you know this woman?' he asked. The photo showed a thin young runner crossing the finishing line, sweat shining on her face. 'That is my aunt, Xu Ying,' he said. 'Winning a national title was her dream, but losing her first three races almost broke her heart. Running taught her that success needs patience, not luck.'

Her steady progress impressed her coach, who once said, 'Technique can be taught, but an athlete's character decides how far she can go.''

Staying in bed and recovering was the safe choice, but quitting was simply not in her nature. She chose to compete, and her fighting spirit moved everyone in the stadium. She did not win that day — but she earned more respect than any champion.'

The story touched Li Lei deeply. 'I used to think that winning was everything,' he said. 'Now I understand that performing well is not the same as fighting hard.' Han Mei agreed. 'Practising the piano every evening is boring sometimes, but I know every hour of practice builds my skill.' Cozy smiled. 'Exactly. Setting a target is easy; hitting it takes thousands of hours of training.'

They are remembered for the hope they pass on.' The class applauded, their hearts full of new respect for every athlete who never gives up.

-ing 形式作主语（动名词）
Doing sth. + 谓语动词（单数）
动名词作主语，谓语动词用单数：Running before sunrise became her daily habit. （日出前跑步成了她的日常习惯。）
动名词短语较长时，可用 it 作形式主语：It is no use crying over spilt milk. （覆水难收。）
动名词作主语侧重习惯性、抽象的动作：Swimming is good for the body. （游泳对身体有益。）
⚠️ 与不定式作主语的区别：动名词泛指一般行为，不定式常指某次具体动作（Reading is fun. / To read this book is my plan.）。
-ing 形式作定语
单个 -ing 前置：a running man | -ing 短语后置：the boy standing there
单个 -ing 放在名词前，表示主动或正在进行：the rising sun（升起的太阳），a sleeping baby（熟睡的婴儿）。
-ing 短语放在名词后，相当于定语从句：The girl singing on the stage is my sister. （在台上唱歌的女孩是我妹妹。= who is singing）
表用途时 -ing 修饰物：a swimming pool（游泳池 = a pool for swimming），a reading room（阅览室）。
⚠️ 物作主语时用 -ing 表主动（The book is interesting. 书有趣），用 -ed 表被动（I am interested. 我感兴趣）。
