The Night the Storm Came
It was a dark October night. Jack's family was having dinner when the first alarm sounded on his father's phone. 'A typhoon is coming,' his father announced, his voice serious. 'We need to move the car and check the supplies.' Outside, the wind was rising and the rain was beating against the windows. Jack was watching the news while his mother was filling bottles with water. Everyone was moving fast.

While they were preparing, the lights suddenly went out. 'Don't panic,' his mother said calmly. 'This is the moment we prepared for.' Jack lit a candle, and the family gathered in the living room. Through the window, they could see trees bending like bows. A loud crash came from the garden — a large branch was falling onto their shed. Jack's heart was beating fast, but he tried to stay calm and help his little sister.

The next morning, the storm had passed. The neighbourhood looked completely different: fallen trees lay across the streets, and water had flooded the low places. Jack was walking to the corner shop when he saw two elderly neighbours trying to move a heavy branch from the road. He ran over to help them. 'Thank you, young man,' the old lady said, her hands shaking. 'Our son is coming to rescue us, but you are the first to lend a hand.'

Later, Cozy organized a class meeting about the disaster. 'Natural disasters tend to strike without warning,' he said. 'That is why we must learn to predict the risk and prevent the danger. During a typhoon, staying inside and listening to official signals can save your life.' He taught the students how to prepare an emergency bag: water, food, a torch, a radio and important medicine. 'Aid from outside takes time,' he reminded them. 'The first rescuers are often neighbours.'

Weeks later, Jack visited the elderly couple again. Their house had been repaired, and they had planted a small tree to replace the one the storm had destroyed. 'Look,' the old man said, pointing at the sky, 'the birds are coming back. Nature recovers, and so do we.' Jack smiled. He had survived his first typhoon, and he had learned the most valuable lesson of all: in every disaster, kindness is the strongest signal of hope.

was / were + doing
At eight last night, I was doing my homework.
常与 at that time, at 8 o'clock yesterday, this time last week 等时间状语连用:The wind was rising and the rain was beating against the windows.
Outside, the wind was blowing hard.
was/were doing ... when ... did(when 从句用一般过去时)
I was watching TV when the lights went out.
While I was cooking, my brother was playing games.
While they were preparing, the lights suddenly went out.
