A Festival Called Home
The Spring Festival is the most important tradition in China, and every family has its own way of celebrating it. In Han Mei's home, preparations begin a week before the festival. Her father writes couplets, her mother makes dumplings, and her grandfather tells stories about the harvest in the old days. 'Every custom has a meaning,' her grandmother always says. 'Each of the dishes on the table tells a story.'

This year, however, something special happened. Han Mei's cousin, who graduated from university and now works in another city, came home for the festival. 'The whole family gathers at the table on New Year's Eve,' Han Mei told Jack excitedly. 'My uncle, my aunt, my cousins — everyone is here. The number of people at our dinner table is usually twelve, but this year there are fourteen. More people means more joy!'

On New Year's Eve, Han Mei's grandmother taught the young people how to make dumplings. 'The shape of a dumpling looks like an ancient coin,' she explained, 'so eating them means wealth and good luck.' Watching the flour fly, Jack asked, 'Why do you put a coin inside one dumpling?' 'Whoever finds the coin will have good fortune all year,' Han Mei laughed. 'Everyone hopes the coin will be found by a child, because the happiness of the young is the harvest of the old.'

At midnight, fireworks lit up the sky, and the family stood in the yard together. 'The tradition of setting off fireworks began hundreds of years ago,' Han Mei's father said. 'Our ancestors believed that loud noise could drive away bad luck.' He looked at his children. 'Remember, my dear, the customs may change, but the meaning of the festival remains the same: to honour our elders, to thank the past year, and to welcome the new one with hope.'

On the third day of the festival, the family visited the old neighbourhood where Han Mei's grandparents grew up. An old man was performing a folk opera in the square, and the audience was clapping along. 'Why is this opera still performed today?' Han Mei asked. Her grandfather smiled. 'Because the story it tells is worthy of being remembered. Some things — like the love of family — are proper to keep forever.' Han Mei held his hand tightly, feeling the warmth of tradition.

every / each / either / neither / one of + 名词作主语,谓语用单数:Each of the dishes tells a story.
The happiness of the young is the harvest of the old.
主语后跟 with, together with, as well as 时,谓语与真正的主语一致:The teacher, together with his students, is singing.
either...or / neither...nor / there be + 就近主语 | the number of + 单数;a number of + 复数
either...or / neither...nor / not only...but also Either you or I am wrong.
the number of(…… The number of visitors is limited. / A number of visitors are waiting outside.

⚠️ there be 句型的 be 动词与最近的名词一致:There is a pen and two books on the desk.
