When in Rome, Do as the Romans Do

Every country has its own customs and manners. When you greet people in Japan, you are supposed to bow. In France, people may kiss on the cheek. In the United States, a warm hug or a handshake is common.
每个国家都有自己的风俗和礼仪。在日本问候别人时应该鞠躬。在法国,人们可能亲吻脸颊。在美国,热情的拥抱或握手很常见。

Table manners also differ. In the west, you are not supposed to put your elbows on the table. You should use a fork, a knife and a napkin, not your hands. But in many Asian countries, chopsticks are the king of the table.
餐桌礼仪也不同。在西方,不应该把胳膊肘放在桌上。应该用叉子、刀和餐巾,而不是手。但在许多亚洲国家,筷子是餐桌之王。

When you drop by a friend's house, you are supposed to knock first and greet the family politely. In some places, you should take off your shoes at the door. In others, you should bring a small present as a treat.
顺便拜访朋友家时,应该先敲门并礼貌问候全家。在一些地方,进门要脱鞋。在另一些地方,应该带个小礼物表示心意。

A good guest goes out of his or her way to make the host feel comfortable. A gentleman or a lady is always polite, patient and kind. They nod and smile, even when the language is different.
好客人会格外努力让主人感到舒适。绅士或淑女总是礼貌、耐心、友善。即使语言不通,他们也会点头微笑。

Cultural exchange teaches us to understand each other. The west and the east have different styles, but respect is the same everywhere. Remember: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
