A Bridge of Smiles
The news spread like fire: a French exchange student named Camille would be joining their class for three months, and Han Mei's family had agreed to host her. On the first day, Camille stood nervously at the door, and the whole class greeted her with a thunderous welcome.

'Food is the fastest language,' Han Mei declared one evening, watching Camille devour her fourth dumpling. The whole class adopted the habit of speaking slowly and drawing pictures when words failed.
Han Mei 教 Camille 用筷子、用标准声调说“你好”，还教她包不会散开的饺子。作为回报，Camille 教她法语问候、贴面礼的艺术和做可丽饼的秘诀。“食物是最快的语言，”一天晚上，Han Mei 看着 Camille 吞下第四个饺子时宣布。全班养成了习惯：词不达意时就放慢语速、画图帮忙。
Slowly, the two girls discovered how much they had in common. Both loved music, both collected postcards, and both secretly wrote poetry. 'Your poems are so emotional,' Camille said.
