A Bowl of Noodles, Two Worlds
🔊 全文朗读
🔊
The international food festival was the most exciting event of the term. Students from different countries set up their stalls in the school hall, and the smell of spices filled the air. It was Maria, the exchange student from Italy, who surprised everyone most. She served a bowl of noodles with a rich tomato sauce, and on the plate she wrote two words: 'Two Worlds'. Everyone wondered what she meant.
Maria told her story while the students tasted the noodles. 'My grandfather came to China twenty years ago and opened a small restaurant,' she said. 'He learned to cook Chinese noodles, and my grandmother taught him her Italian tomato sauce. So this dish was born from both cultures.' The students listened, amazed. The noodles, which looked simple, carried a family history and a journey between two countries.

After the tasting, the festival continued with music and dancing. While (they were) cooking together, the students had exchanged recipes and phone numbers. Jack played a Chinese folk song on his guitar, and an Italian boy danced to it. Someone pointed at the dance and laughed: 'It looks so natural!' Maria smiled. 'That is the beauty of culture. When we are not afraid to mix, something new and wonderful is born.'
In the evening, Cozy gave a short speech. 'It is through food that cultures first meet,' he said. 'But it is through respect that they truly understand each other. Do not just taste the noodles; taste the story behind them. Recognise the beauty in what is different, and you will find that the world is much bigger and warmer than you imagined.' The students clapped, and Li Lei wrote Cozy's words down in his notebook.
The festival ended with a group photo of all the students from different countries. In the photo, Maria held her bowl of noodles, and next to her stood Li Lei with a plate of dumplings. 'Next year, I will teach you to make dumplings,' Li Lei said. 'And I will teach you to make pizza!' Maria laughed. That night, Li Lei realised that culture is not a wall but a bridge, and every exchange builds one more stone of it.
