November came, and the first half of senior one was over. Sitting on the playground after school, Li Lei looked up at the sky and sighed. 'Half a term has passed, and I have changed a lot,' he said. 'Actually, I used to be nervous about everything, but now I feel much calmer.' Jack laughed. 'Absolutely! Remember our first English speech? My legs were shaking so hard that I could hardly stand.'
The first months had been a real challenge for all of them. There was so much homework that they often stayed up late, and the pressure of exams made them anxious. Li Lei admitted that he had almost given up twice. Then he learned to manage his time: he made a schedule, set small goals and built regular study habits. 'The secret is not to work harder, but to work smarter,' he said, which made everyone nod.
Cozy, their teacher, also helped them look after their mental health. 'Your mind is like a garden,' he told the class. 'If you do not relax, it cannot grow. Take time for leisure, go for a walk, listen to music, and do not forget to breathe.' Following his advice, the four friends started running together every Tuesday evening. Sweating on the track, they forgot their worries and found a strange kind of freedom.
When the mid-term results came out, the four friends were all surprised and grateful. Their scores had improved greatly, especially in English and maths. 'I want to thank everyone who supported me,' Han Mei said quietly. 'And I want to thank myself, too, for not giving up.' Li Lei smiled and added, 'Growing up means learning to take responsibility for your own life. That is what this half term has taught me.'
As the sun went down, the four friends stood up and stretched. 'We still have a long way to go,' Jack said, 'but I am not afraid anymore.' Lily nodded. 'The second half is a new opportunity. Let us keep a steady pace and enjoy every day.' They walked towards the bright classroom building together, their shadows long on the playground, their steps light and full of hope for the days ahead.
