Saving the Snow Leopard
High in the western mountains, a small nature reserve is home to one of the rarest animals on Earth, the snow leopard. For years, these beautiful cats were threatened by hunters and by the loss of their environment. Now the situation is changing. The snow leopard is being protected by law, and its home is being watched day and night by camera teams. Wildlife officers say the population is slowly rising again.

Jack and Han Mei joined a volunteer group that observes the leopards. Every weekend, they check the cameras placed in the mountains. 'A lot of data has been collected this year,' Han Mei said excitedly. 'More than forty pictures of snow leopards have been recorded, including two mothers with cubs.' The volunteers use special equipment to follow the animals' habits without disturbing them, and their notes are shared with scientists across the country.

One cold morning, an alarm call came from the reserve. A young leopard had been found injured near the road, and it was being rescued by the local team. The animal was taken to a nearby centre, where its wound was treated carefully. 'The rescue has been supported by many kind people,' said Cozy, their teacher. 'But we must remember that the real protection happens every day, in small efforts like ours.' The leopard, named Xiaoxue, is now recovering well.

The volunteers also teach people about the environment. They give talks in villages and schools, explaining why the balance of nature is so important. 'If the snow leopard disappears, the whole food chain will be affected,' Jack told the students. 'Pollution and hunting must be prevented, and new policies are needed to protect the mountains.' Slowly, more and more local people have become aware of the value of the rare animal and have joined the protection work.
At the end of the year, the volunteer group was given a special award for their efforts. Their goal is simple but strong: to help the snow leopard survive in its native home. 'We may not see the final result in our lifetime,' Han Mei said with a smile, 'but every picture we take is a step towards a better future. If we keep trying, the mountains will always have their quiet king.'
